2018 MINI Hardtop 4 Door vs 2018 MINI Hardtop 2 Door
Serving Ramsey, Clifton, and Wayne, NJ
Since the 2000s, BMW has been producing the resurrected MINI marquee—just in time for a time when gas prices have been significantly increasing. Fitted with small but peppy engines, the MINI vehicles are ideal for economical shoppers. Plus, with their small body styles, they are nimble, easy to drive, and can navigate dense areas with ease. The most affordable vehicle in the MINI line-up is the Hardtop, which is available in two-door (2 Door) and four-door (4 Door) iterations. For the 2018 model year, the 2 Door is available in Cooper, Cooper S, and John Cooper Works trims, while the 4 Door sticks with Cooper and Cooper S variants.
Performance
The Cooper trim of the 2018 MINI Hardtop is powered by a 1.5-liter twin-turbocharged 3-cylinder engine, which generates 134 horsepower and 162 lb-ft of torque. The upper-level Cooper S trim gets a 2.0-liter twin-turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 189 horsepower and 207 lb-ft of torque. And the 2 Door-exclusive John Cooper Works trim has the same 2.0-liter 4-cylinder as the Cooper S, albeit with increased output: 228 horsepower and 236 lb-ft of torque. The standard gearbox is a 6-speed manual transmission. However, the Cooper S offers you the chance of switching it with a 6-speed automatic transmission, which is accompanied by paddle shifters to simulate manual gear shifting by granting more control over gear shifting. Notably, the 6-speed automatic gearbox is standard on the John Cooper Works trim. Depending on configuration, the 2018 MINI Hardtop can achieve a peak 0-60 mph of 6.1 seconds.
Appearance
For the most part, the 2018 MINI Hardtop retains the exterior design of its predecessors: beetle-like profile, circular headlamps, sloping front end, and sharp-edged top. Standard on the vehicle are power heated side mirrors and 15-inch alloy wheels. By upgrading to the Cooper S, you’d also get a rear spoiler to improve aerodynamic performance, front fog lights for more penetrating illumination, and 16-inch alloy wheels. Unique to the John Cooper Works 2 Door trim are brighter and longer-lasting LED headlamps, 17-inch alloy wheels, and white side-body turn signals (instead of amber ones).
Safety
For restraint and cushioning in the event of a collision, the 2018 MINI Hardtop has eight airbags. Two of them—installed for front impact—face the driver and front passenger. Two airbags are placed at the knees of both front occupants for lower-body protection. Dual airbags are installed on the front seats for front-occupant thorax protection. And a pair of side curtain airbags is installed on the ceiling for head protection of all occupants. Performance Control technology is present on the Hardtop for adjusting driving dynamics; that way, you’d be in better control of the vehicle.
