No one enjoys driving on icy roads. At some point, many drivers endure a terrifying experience when the vehicle slides. Knowing how to handle the situation ensures the safety of the driver, the vehicle, and others on the road.

The vehicle may begin to fishtail or slide slightly back and forth. The event is an indication that the driver is going too fast for the road conditions. Making the correction involves gradually slowing the traveling speed. Resist the urge to apply the brakes, which could cause over-correcting and complete loss of control.

A vehicle sliding on ice is also corrected by staying calm and using a few techniques. First, remove the foot from the gas pedal to encourage the vehicle to slow down. But, do not apply the brakes. Turn the steering wheel gently in the direction in which the back wheels are sliding. As the vehicle straightens, stop turning.
