2016 MINI Countryman vs FIAT 500X

Serving Ramsey, NJ, Clifton, Wayne, Hackensack and beyond

When you're in the market for a trim, efficient crossover SUV, two impressive models are the MINI Countryman and the FIAT 500X. Both have nice seating for five, are economical and have sharp styling. However, the MINI offers a better fuel economy, more potent powertrain and superior handling at a lower price. Couple that with better rust-proof warranties and it's plain to see why a close assessment of both vehicles makes the Countryman your better choice.

A Tale of the Tape

Driving the MINI Countryman is a barrel of fun: quick acceleration, tight cornering, grin-inducing steering and go-kart handling. Sport mode enhances the steering and throttle response even more. As with all MINI vehicles, the Countryman has super-appealing style as evidenced by the brawny lines, longer wheelbase, squat bulldog stance, elongated headlights and greater ground clearance. You'll appreciate the ease of loading cargo via the rising tailgate as well as the drama-free 4-door passenger access. Those who demand extra traction will love the ALL4 version of the Cooper S Countryman.

The spacious and charming interior is comfy, even on long trips. The seats are very supportive, and the rear seats fold down for oodles of extra space. Standard features include 6-speaker audio with AM/FM/CD/HD Radio and automatic speed volume control, 17-inch wheels, 6-way adjustable front sport seats, keyless entry, pushbutton start, Bluetooth connectivity, seven airbags, dynamic brake- and traction-control systems, air scoop, rear spoiler, brake ducts, aluminum foot pedals, front fog lights and electronic brake-force distribution. In addition, there are a dozens of accessories and options that you can choose to completely personalize your Countryman to match your unique style.

500X Shortcomings

Both vehicles are equipped with AWD, but the Countryman has a turbocharged engine with a dual overhead cam valve train, compared to the single cam setup in the 500X. The Countryman offers superior horsepower and torque while saving you $1,200. The MINI will also save you money at the pump, as it provides an extra 4 MPG in the city and 1 MPG on highway roads. The MINI with manual transmission is engaging to drive, while the FIAT is burdened with a 9-speed automatic that is slow to react and often makes hard shifts that certainly detract from the overall driving experience.

Countryman offers more front headroom and a longer wheelbase as compared to the 500X. Roof rails and a CD player are standard on the MINI but not available on the FIAT. You can upgrade to premium wheels on the Countryman, but you can't get them on the 500X. In terms of resale value, the MINI provides a 12-year/unlimited mileage warranty against rust and corrosion, while the 500X provides only 5 years/100K miles of rust protection.
